Grant Morden

An Architect by profession, Grant Morden is a self-taught Canadian artist living in Ottawa, Ontario. His work, in oils, captures his vision of the Canadian Landscape mainly in the Ottawa, Ontario and Pontiac, Quebec regions.

Grant paints the Canadian Landscape because there is infinite variety of subject matter: Elemental and Powerful. He is drawn to the colours, patterns, and rhythms of movement and the interplay of light in nature. What is created is a recognizable image of the Canadian Landscape frozen in space and time; not intended to be a wholly realistic view of the subject, but rather, a snapshot showing how the objects in space relate to each other through movement.

Inspiration comes from a need to capture a moment in time as a snapshot of the Canadian Landscape, and painting is a response to this creative need. Artistic influences include Tom Thompson, Vincent Van Gogh and Frank Lloyd Wright. In his work, Grant combines texture, colour, light and movement, to bring life to the canvas. A canvas is a 2-dimensional surface, and the landscape is treated as a 2-dimensional object in space using colour, light and pattern to create movement with little differentiation between foreground and background. Perspective and depth is created using light, shadow and colour.
