Eryn O'Neill

Eryn O'Neill's work is focused on urban settings, particularly the urban landscape of Ottawa. She uses both recognizable landmarks and more industrial spaces to create visually appealing images. Discovering beauty in urban settings has been a recurring theme in her work for the past few years. She focuses on how we navigate urban environments, and what we consider to be visually stimulating.

In urban settings nature can be overlooked in favour of density and development. In her most recent paintings, she has chosen sites that make a conscious effort to maintain a relationship with nature by incorporating it into the space, for example, the painting “Urban/Nature” is taken form the perspective of the Canadian War Museum’s living roof, incorporated into the landscape and creating a visually compelling structure.

These spaces offer a visual balance between the manufactured landscape and the natural environment, and between unlikely combinations of shapes, forms and materials. Nature is determined to reclaim the land from manmade structures, which provides tension in the scenes. She has tried to emphasize this balance with creative perspectives that capture the intersection of these two themes.

Eryn holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, NS. She is now pursuing her Masters of Fine Art (MFA) at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, ON.
